The ATC400 sprocket output is a critical mechanical link that connects the transfer case internal chain drive to the driveshaft. It ensures that torque is transferred properly and uniformly from the transfer case to the axles, maintaining the 4WD system’s integrity.

The ATC400 transfer case was primarily used in the BMW X3 E83 series (produced roughly between 2003 and 2010). Before ordering, you should verify that your vehicle is equipped with the ATC400 unit rather than the later ATC350 or ATC450 versions.

Replacing the sprocket output requires opening the transfer case housing. This is a task of moderate to high difficulty, involving the removal of the driveshaft and internal chain. It is recommended for experienced DIYers or professional mechanics with the proper tools for drivetrain repair.

To extend the life of your ATC400 internal components, ensure you change the transfer case fluid at recommended intervals and always use four identical tires. Significant differences in tire circumference put excessive stress on the sprocket and chain assembly.
