Transfer case chain (ATC13-1)

Common symptoms of a stretched ATC13-1 chain include a clicking or snapping noise during hard acceleration, a “jerking” sensation while driving, or the 4×4 system failing to engage smoothly. If the chain skips teeth on the internal gears, you will feel a distinct hesitation in the drivetrain.

This is often caused by a loose or stretched transfer case chain. In the ATC13-1 unit, the chain is responsible for syncing the front and rear axles. When it stretches, it loses tension and slips, causing that uncomfortable jerking or shuddering feeling under load.

This specific chain is designed for the ATC13-1 transfer case model, which is typically found in modern BMW G-series vehicles and certain X-drive configurations. Always verify your transfer case model code on the housing tag before ordering.

Replacing just the chain is a cost-effective way to repair a transfer case, provided the internal gears and the housing aren’t damaged. If you catch the symptoms early (like minor noise or slight jerking), a chain replacement usually restores full functionality.

Ignoring a worn chain can lead to catastrophic failure. A loose chain can eventually snap or wear down the sprocket teeth, potentially cracking the aluminum transfer case housing, which would require a much more expensive full unit replacement.
