Transfer case drum (ATC13-1)

Common symptoms include jerking or shuddering during acceleration, vibrations under load, or a binding sensation during tight turns. A worn drum prevents the clutch pack from engaging smoothly, leading to inconsistent power distribution in your BMW xDrive system.

This drum is specifically engineered for the ATC13-1 transfer case model. You can verify compatibility by checking the identification plate on your transfer case housing. It is typically found in late-model BMW vehicles with xDrive systems.

The drum acts as the housing and contact surface for the clutch plates. If the drum is grooved or worn, the clutches cannot apply pressure evenly. This results in slipping, overheating, and eventually, a total failure of the 4WD system.

In most cases, we recommend a full replacement. Once the internal surfaces of the ATC13-1 drum are scarred or heat-damaged, machining them usually brings the component out of tolerance, which will cause further clutch engagement issues.

Replacing this component requires disassembling the transfer case, which is a complex task. It involves specific torque settings and cleanliness standards. Unless you have advanced mechanical experience and the proper tools, professional installation is highly recommended.
